Bumrungrad Health Briefing #69: Breathe Better, Sleep Deeper: Inspire Therapy for Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Breathe Better, Sleep Deeper: Inspire Therapy for Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common but often underdiagnosed condition in which the airway repeatedly collapses during sleep. Although the chest and abdominal muscles continue to move, breathing temporarily stops, leading to disrupted sleep, loud snoring, and excessive daytime fatigue. Over time, untreated OSA can increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, and other serious health issues.
Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is one of the treatment options for obstructive sleep apnea. For individuals who cannot tolerate it, alternatives such as Inspire Therapy—a minimally invasive solution approved by both the U.S. FDA and Thai FDA—may be considered.
What is Inspire Therapy?
Inspire® is a small device implanted under the skin through a minor surgical procedure. It works by stimulating the hypoglossal nerve, which moves the tongue forward during sleep to help keep the airway open—reducing breathing interruptions throughout the night.
Key features of Inspire Therapy:
-
No external mask or tubing
-
Operated by a handheld remote control
-
Sleep data can be tracked and shared with your physician via the Inspire® app
-
Battery lasts 10 years
-
Stimulation settings are adjustable based on individual needs
Is Inspire Therapy right for you?
Inspire Therapy may be considered for adults who:
-
Are 18 years or older
-
Have moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA): AHI 15–100
-
Cannot tolerate or do not wish to use continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP)
-
Have a BMI below 40 kg/m²
-
Do not have serious heart, lung, or neuromuscular conditions
If you or a loved one experiences symptoms such as loud snoring, gasping during sleep, or unexplained daytime sleepiness, a sleep study is recommended to assess for sleep apnea.
